The Butterfly Shop

The Butterfly Shop in Kuranda, Cairns, combines a cafe bar with a colourful boutique devoted to gifts, accessories and North Queensland-inspired finds. Set in the heart of Kuranda Village, the shop takes its visual cue from the Ulysses butterfly, with products including silk-winged magnetic butterflies, original jewellery, Paua shell pieces, locally made soaps and body care, women’s clothing, bags and home decor. It is a useful stop for browsing as well as refreshments, particularly if you are exploring the village’s rainforest setting or waiting for a tour bus.

The cafe bar provides indoor and street-front seating, with coffee made from locally grown and roasted beans, along with tea, milkshakes, sundaes, smoothies and other cold drinks. As a licensed cafe, it also serves Australian and international beer, cider, red and white wine, Champagne and cocktails. The food offering covers medium and light lunch options, takeaway snacks, and French tarts and pastries for something sweet. The website also describes a broad ice-cream selection, with 39 flavours available. Food and drinks can be prepared for either dine-in or takeaway, giving the venue flexibility for a quick break or a longer catch-up.

The Butterfly Shop was developed by B and Yayoi after they lived in Japan in the early 2000s, travelled and researched the concept, and returned to Australia in 2010. Their aim was to create an environment that could feel lively and family-friendly while still suiting adults enjoying a drink. Today, the Kuranda venue sits alongside the business’s Palm Cove boutique, but the Kuranda shop and cafe bar remain the focus for visitors wanting retail browsing, local coffee and a licensed refreshment stop in the village.
