Why it's worth checking out
Samurai Gallery Australia offers a focused look at the art, armour and weaponry associated with Japan’s samurai warrior class. Located in Cairns North, it is described as Australia’s only gallery devoted specifically to this subject, with a collection spanning swords, fittings, armour and related Japanese art. Visitors can view katana, wakizashi and tanto blades, along with tsuba sword guards, menpo masks and other pieces connected with samurai culture.
One of the collection’s notable objects is a tachi, or long sword, dating to the Heian period at around 1040 AD. The gallery also displays items several hundred years old, giving the visit a strong historical focus rather than presenting samurai culture only through popular imagery. The collection reflects the importance of Bushido, the code associated with loyalty, martial skill and honour, and the long role of the samurai as Japan’s warrior class.
The gallery was established by owner and operator John Grasso, whose interest began with martial arts and Japanese swords during his teenage years. He acquired his first original katana at 17 and gradually built a broader collection encompassing sword fittings, armour and other samurai-related works. His experience also includes dealing in Japanese swords, travelling to exhibitions in Australia and the United States, visiting Japan to develop his knowledge, and arranging professional restoration of swords through traditionally qualified Japanese craftspeople.
This is a suitable stop for visitors with an interest in Japanese history, martial arts, collecting or craftsmanship, whether visiting independently or as part of a group. Families are catered for through a family admission option, while group bookings are available. The gallery lists admission at $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $25 for a family pass. Its listed hours are Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm and Saturday from 9.30am to 3pm, with Sundays closed. As it is independently operated, the gallery advises calling ahead if the venue is unattended during business hours or if you would like to arrange a visit outside the listed times. Selected pieces are also available for purchase, although not every item is listed online.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.6 from 49 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
