Why it's worth checking out
Kuranda Arts Co-op is a not-for-profit gallery in Kuranda, Cairns, showcasing an changing selection of locally made artwork by its members. The collection spans a broad range of mediums, making it a useful stop for visitors who want to see more than one kind of practice in the same space. Works mentioned by the gallery include painting, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, sculpture and mixed-media pieces, with the displays evolving as new work comes in.
The gallery is run by the artists themselves, giving the space a personal, community-minded character. Visitors are encouraged to meet the makers and learn about the processes, materials and ideas behind their work. That direct connection is a central part of the experience, whether you are browsing independently, visiting with friends or looking for a considered gift with a clear connection to the region. The gallery’s own visitor information also highlights handmade ceramics, canvases, jewellery and other distinctive pieces, each available to purchase while supporting the local artists involved.
You’ll find the co-op on the corner of Coondoo and Thongon Streets, in Kuranda’s historic RSL building. Its setting in the rainforest village adds context to the work: the co-op describes Kuranda as a place that has long attracted artists inspired by the colours and forms of the surrounding tropical rainforest. It is a relaxed option for a solo browse, an art-focused outing or a stop for groups exploring Kuranda, with enough variety to suit people interested in both fine and craft-based work.
The organisation began in 1996, when artists and craftspeople joined forces through the Kuranda markets so they could support one another and spend more time making. The co-op later moved into a dedicated retail gallery and has since been involved in exhibitions, artist workshops and regional arts projects. It is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, except Christmas Day. If you find something you want to take home, the gallery has experience packing and shipping artwork internationally, so larger or delicate purchases can be sent safely to your door.
