Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse

Flagstaff Hill offers a straightforward walk to one of the best vantage points over Port Douglas. From the summit, the view takes in the Coral Sea, Four Mile Beach, the marina and the mountains inland, with the township and surrounding landscape spread below. The trail passes through coastal scrub and remnant rainforest before opening out at the top, making the changing scenery part of the experience rather than simply a route to a lookout.

The walk is described as an easy loop beginning on Island Point Road, a short distance from the centre of Port Douglas. The trail can be visited at any time of day, although early morning is recommended for cooler conditions, quieter surroundings and attractive light.

There is more to Flagstaff Hill than the scenery. The hill is named for a signal station established in the late 1800s, when Port Douglas was a busy port serving the Hodgkinson goldfields. Ships watched for signals from the elevated site as they navigated the reef passage into the harbour. While the original flagstaff is no longer there, the hill’s position still makes the maritime history easy to understand, with broad views across the sea approaches. Interpretive signs along the trail provide further context about Port Douglas’s past.

Bring your own water, as there are no facilities on-site. The trailhead is walkable from Macrossan Street, and the source also suggests stopping at the rock platform on the way down to look for marine life in the tidal pools. That makes the visit flexible: allow a little longer if you want to pause and explore, or keep it short as a gentle lookout walk above Port Douglas.
