Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod

Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod is a long-running Far North Queensland organisation that gives young performers a platform to develop their skills in public. Based in Edge Hill, Cairns, it presents an annual competitive performing arts festival for local schools, dance schools and music teachers, while also welcoming competitors from across Queensland and interstate.

The eisteddfod includes music and speech events, with opportunities for participants to receive professional critique and build confidence through performance. Its approach is centred on fair, supportive competition, with the stated aim of helping each student reach their potential and develop a lasting connection with the performing arts. It is a useful introduction to live performance for young people, as well as a way for teachers and schools to showcase their students.

The association’s own hall at 67–71 Greenslopes Street has been part of its story since 1986. Music and speech events have been held there since the organisation’s 41st eisteddfod, giving the program a dedicated home in the Cairns community. The organisation itself began more than 70 years ago, with the first eisteddfod held in 1956, and is run by a management committee, sub-committees and members who volunteer their time.

This is best suited to young performers, families and supporters attending sessions, and educators looking for structured performance opportunities for their students. It also has a community-minded side beyond the festival: new members are welcome, and regular association meetings are held at the Edge Hill hall.
