Bulmba-ja arts centre

Bulmba-ja is an arts, theatre and gallery centre in Edge Hill, Cairns, with a strong focus on the stories and cultural practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It supports the wider Far North Queensland arts scene through exhibitions, performances, creative development and events across the year.

The centre is home to several arts organisations, including JUTE Theatre Company, Miriki Performing Arts, NorthSite Contemporary Arts and The Pryce Centre for Culture and Arts. That mix gives Bulmba-ja a varied cultural program, with something to explore whether you are visiting for a gallery exhibition, a performance or a scheduled arts event. NorthSite Contemporary Arts Gallery and Store is also located at the centre.

Bulmba-ja’s name, pronounced “BUUM-ba-jar”, carries a shared meaning of “house” or “place” in the Yidinji and Yirrganydji languages. The venue opened in 2020 after a major refurbishment intended to strengthen arts and cultural activity in Far North Queensland. Its spaces are also available for hire, making it relevant to organisations planning functions or creative events.

The on-site Hungry Pitcher is a licensed café open for breakfast and lunch daily except Sunday, with coffee, salads, gourmet sandwiches, juices and cakes.
