Botanical gardens

Botanical gardens in Edge Hill, Cairns, offer an extensive introduction to tropical plants in a setting designed for both relaxed wandering and learning. The gardens are known for their broad collection of tropical flora, with areas including the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden, Zhanjiang Friendship Garden, Flecker Gardens, Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory and the Centenary Lakes area. The atmosphere is leafy and open, with ornamental plant displays, lake areas and plenty of opportunities to observe local birdlife. Visitors can explore independently or join a free walking tour focused on the plants and animals found throughout the gardens. The Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre provides information, along with access to a library and details about food and volunteer opportunities. Families are well catered for through Little Taccas, a fortnightly nature-based program for children under five that includes art and craft, storytelling, sing-alongs and garden discovery walks. The gardens also run Little Sprouts programs for children, subject to registration. For larger groups, the site is available for family functions and corporate events, although visitors planning an event should contact the gardens directly for details.

Flecker Gardens and the Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory are open daily from 7.30am to 5.30pm, weather permitting, while the other garden areas are open at all times. The Visitor Centre has separate weekday, weekend and public holiday hours. On-street parking is available on Collins Avenue and Greenslopes Street, and a Sunbus stop is located outside Flecker Gardens. Some Flecker Garden paths are unsuitable for wheelchairs and prams, while the remainder of the gardens, including Centenary Lakes, is fully accessible. Pets are not permitted, except for registered assistance animals.
