Australian Art - Original Art Paintings

Australian Art - Original Art Paintings is the Cairns studio practice of artist Petra Meikle de Vlas, based in Holloways Beach, about 15 minutes north of Cairns city. Inspired by the waters around the region and the Great Barrier Reef, Petra creates mixed-media paintings that echo reef and ocean formations.

Her process is an important part of the work. Rather than relying only on conventional painting methods, she layers materials on boards and uses tools including her hands, air guns, spray bottles, a blowtorch and gravity. Paint is poured and shaped as the board is moved, while the interaction between pigments creates textured, fluid compositions. The resulting works are offered as originals and prints.

The Holloways Beach studio welcomes visitors by appointment, making it best suited to people who would like a more personal look at the artist’s work and methods. Petra’s originals are also shown through galleries in Cairns, including Australia Gallery on Lake Street and Landmark Gallery on Sheridan Street, as well as selected galleries in Port Douglas and Yungaburra.
